Second Life - An Employers' Curse or Blessing?
Date: Wed, Feb 13th, 2008 6:00:01 pm | Location: Guardian Newsroom, 60, Farringdon Rd., London EC1R 3GA | Speaker: Isabelle Hung, Head of National Resourcing, Yell and Dave Coombs, Regional Head of Digital, TMP
In the early 1990s, no one would have believed that the demand for quality candidates would be so strong by 2008. With this growth has been a shift in the balance of demand, with employers seeing their traditionally strong position weakened. Most employers still need to re-think their recruitment strategies to meet these changes. What are these changes and how, if at all, should they respond?
Obvious reasons have been cited for the shift in demand, but many employers have overlooked some of the catalytic drivers which have fuelled and accelerated the shift: the use of technology in shaping the market and people's lives, and employees entering the workplace with more information, less tolerance of criticism, and greater technological skill. In fact, the traditional generation gap has been exacerbated by the technology gap, and young people are recognising their power, and using it to ensure that their conditions allow them to mix business and pleasure to suit their agendas. Fortune magazine deemed young employees, or "Generation Y" as they are referred to, in its May 28, 2007, issue "the most high-maintenance, yet potentially most high-performing generation in history".
Controversy surrounds the perceived need for companies to pander to these new trends. However Isabelle Hung has anticipated and met this challenge. Yell recruits outstanding young managers. And through Dave Coombs, TMP has been facilitating these employers choices globally, with particular regard to Second Life. Other organisations should at least join the debate.
The Recruitment Society is fortunate to host Isabelle and Dave in what should be a fascinating presentation of facts and argument. We should like to thank Guardian Recruitment Solutions for their sponsorship and support for this event.
